ELIA & DIOSMOS
Kalamata, Greece

TYPE: Restaurant
AREA: 95 m²
YEAR: 2012
The economic crisis forces the owner of any commercial business to demand the renovation of their shop so as to increase their income at the minimum possible cost both in time and in money.
The only way to solve the “equation” is to recycle existing items, as many as possible, in an attempt to provide a new theme to the shop’s character.
The renovation referred only to the restaurant area and did not include any other space. The low wooden ceiling, which according to the owner should be retained, became the core of the design concept. Along the narrow side it would be transformed into a solid coach whereas on the opposite side it would give its way to an open cabinet which while decorating the space would also solve the storage issue. Moreover, the addition of a reception bench, which would also function as a clients’ waiting bench during peak hour, would complete the rear part of the area. As far as the lightening is concerned, the suspended bell luminaires would remain only along the side tables whereas elsewhere recessed luminaires would be used allowing greater table rearrangement freedom according to demand. The removal of most of the suspended bell luminaires gives the sense of greater height in an already low ceiling shop. Finally the alteration of the green colored wall to a more warm red colored one and also the recovery of the wood natural color from the existing black and white form would provide warmth to the restaurant area.
